More Shots From Last Saturday's VMF Game

Image
My VMF game went really well last Saturday. I am more convinced than ever that running VMF, a skirmish RPG, as a pure TTRPG is a really great way to do super RPGs.  Structuring each session around two battles / major encounters, and throwing in a roll for each player on the Backup Tales table prior to each battle, creates amazing role-play and storytelling opportunities. For example, in the previous session, one PC, the Gray Golem, rolled an Old Friend / Old Flame result. We decided he met an old flame, and since his Will roll was a good one, they hit it off again. Awesome!  This time around, he rolled a return to his home town. He decided that he would take his Old Flame with him. This time he rolled poorly on his Will check, and he decided that the visit went poorly and they broke up again during this home visit. That followed him through the rest of his role-play for the session, and it was awesome!  Here's a few pics from the session!  Using cards to track ...

My Other Car Is A BattleMech

While I am a game designer who makes and sells his own games, I love other folks' games too! My buddy, Stu, and I have been playing a monthly BattleTech Override Co-Op campaign for the past year or so. If you've never heard of it, Override is a fan-made version of BT that is a true skirmish miniature game, and delivers a level of detail falling somewhere between Classic BT and the ultra-fast playing Alpha Strike.  The guys from Death From Above Wargaming have a great YouTube channel , and they made this amazing (and free) variant out of pure love for the BT universe.  I thought it might be fun to share a couple of the Mechs from my bespoke Merc unit that Stu and I have been running through its paces.  Here we have an MAD-3D Marauder... and an OTL-4D Ostol.  Both are heavies. Stu has of course painted a bunch of his own Mechs in the same paint scheme. That has not stopped me from painting an entire company of Mechs of my own in this scheme, and I plan to show t...

Irons In The Fire

Anytime I finish a big project like VMF, there is always a period of rest and reflection. What do I work on next? What am I feeling creatively? Should I take a break and coast a bit? That's what I had been doing the last few weeks. Going to Garycon was nice. I played a few games that were not my own (Shadowdark and BASH), and I got to be a player, which is nice for a "Forever GM" like myself.  But this week coming up I need to write up the basic outline for my Saturday, April 19 VMF RPG session. I think it's going to involve the Tinkerer , the Marvel Universe's humblest supervillain supplier.  Pretty sure this is his OHOTMU artwork.  At the end of this month I will also the debut the first installment in what I hope will be a semi-regular support supplement for VMF. That will be the subject of its own blog post here at some point. So while I have been kind of quiet here and on other outlets, I am still working on stuff, but just at a less breakneck pace.  And t...

An Offer Made in Thanks & Celebration

Right now times are tough and things remain uncertain. I find myself wanting to do something, even a small something, for the folks who've followed and stuck with me all these years.  One of my players' VMF PCs entertains MODOK.  What I want to do is give two people each a free copy of the spiral bound VMF rules. The catch is you have to be in the USA, and you have to not otherwise be able to afford it yourself at this time. I understand folks might not want to advertise this, so I will take the first two people who reach out to me via the FCS contact form . Make sure you include your mailing address! Get your gratis copy while they last!  Thanks for reading, and stay safe!  --Scott
